All About Our Tomato Products

Donata Berger | 01 AUG 18

No kitchen is complete without a couple of cans of tomatoes knocking about. The Italians have taught us just how vital they are, and how versatile.

Our tomato range is produced on an organic Italian farm, run by farmers who are committed to avoiding harmful chemicals, pesticides and fertilizers and who shun genetic modification. The beautiful, warm Mediterranean sun that shines throughout the summer months ripens the fruits to perfection. The crop is harvested from July to the end of August, when they are at their very best.

Here at Biona, we are committed to 100% traceability. That's why we only ever work with fully audited suppliers who guarantee the welfare of their employees and who adhere to strict production and harvesting procedures at all times.

Our entire supply chain is verified by a dedicated ethical audit which is managed by an independent assessor - from health and safety and appropriate training of personnel to the type of harvesting used.

All tomatoes are mechanically harvested which means at no point throughout the supply chain is forced labour used. We believe in building long-lasting relationships with our suppliers, who are committed to respecting and protecting the human rights of all those involved in the production of our organic and sustainable tomato products.

We keep our naturally grown, sun-ripened tomatoes as simple as can be, with no added nasties, so their wonderful flavour can shine through.

What's more, all Biona tinned tomatoes are BPA-free and we don’t add citric acid. So, you can rest assured that you’re consuming tomatoes exactly as nature intended.

And as you mentioned nutrition…

Tomatoes have become an everyday food that provide the basis for recipes from all over the world.. Because we use them so regularly it’s easy to overlook their true potential as a nutritious powerhouse. Full of antioxidants, vitamins (including impressive amounts of vitamins C, A and K) and minerals (think manganese, copper, magnesium and potassium) they are a quick and easy way to boost the micronutrients in your meals. They are a good source of fibre, which can aid in digestive health, and are low in natural salts and sugars.

One of the most impressive health benefits of tomatoes is a large amount of lycopene they contain. Lycopene is an antioxidant that gives the tomato its red colour. It is said to be effective at fighting free radicals (damaging molecules in the body that are associated with illness and disease). Tomatoes are one of the best food sources of lycopene and heating/cooking them makes the lycopene even more available to the body.

This means that our canned tomatoes are amazing sources of lycopene and by using them, along with our passata in all of your favourite recipes you’re doing wonders for your health (as well as your taste buds).
