Let's Talk Inflammation
Inflammation gets a pretty bad rap, but here's something we learnt from Dr Frankie Jackson-Spence that might surprise you: inflammation isn't always a bad thing.
In fact, it's one of the ways our bodies protect us. When something goes wrong (like an injury or infection) inflammation is part of our natural response. It's when inflammation becomes long-term that it can become problematic.
So, what can we do about it? We asked Dr Frankie to share some simple, everyday ways to support our health and build healthy habits:
You don't need to train for a marathon. Walking, getting outside and finding ways to keep moving throughout the day all count.
2. Look to the Mediterranean
A Mediterranean-style way of eating is a great place to start - plenty of plants, wholegrains, beans and pulses, alongside healthy fats like a good quality extra virgin olive oil. It's less about one “superfood” and much more about what you eat regularly.
3. Eat a variety of plants
Different plants bring different nutrients, so variety is key. Think colourful fruit and veg, wholegrains, beans, pulses, nuts and seeds.
4. Don't chase perfection
Eating well doesn't mean perfection - it's all about balance and eating foods both for nourishment and enjoyment. It's the overall pattern that matters.
5. Keep it simple
There’s no need to overhaul your whole life - small, consistent habits add up. A little more movement, a few more plants, more wholegrains, good fats and plenty of variety
