The Biona Story

Reintroducing Biona!

New look; same reliably delicious organic food

 

The long-time Biona fans among you have known us since we were one of the only names in the organic food world. And you’ve seen us through a few image changes since then! For those newer to the Biona family, welcome. As we’ve recently freshened things up, we thought this a great opportunity to reintroduce Biona with a whistle-stop tour: our roots, our journey and where we are now.

 

Grab something nourishing, get comfortable and we’ll begin, as they say, at the beginning.

 

Our Roots

The Biona story starts in the 1970s in the west coast of Ireland, where our joint-founder Noel was learning to live off the land. This is where he developed a deep love for respectfully grown produce, which he would take with him thereafter. In 1978 he opened the trailblazing organic shop Windmill Wholefoods, and one of London’s first vegetarian restaurants shortly after.

 

When passionate foodie, reflexologist and wellness proponent Donata entered the picture, their shared vision of a better future through good food was crystallised. Together, they founded Biona: a brand that would be about organic, ethically and sustainably sourced delicious food. They developed the first Biona product, granola, at their own kitchen table. We still make it to this day (just not at the kitchen table, sadly!).

 

Back then, organic farming and eating were relatively little-known concepts. Biona was founded on Noel and Donata’s shared dream of spreading the benefits of organic more widely.

 

Our Journey

We slowly started to develop new products, committing to 100% traceability and premium quality in every decision. In 1992, we added Biona Italian Tomatoes and Biona Black Beans to our range. By 1998, we were selling our own organic food products all over the world.

 

Of course, Noel and Donata’s children, Amy and Elisa, couldn’t help but fall in love with all things organic too. They help run Biona today, bringing their passion and attention to detail to each product.

 

In the past decade, we opened our online shop and created a new online space to share organic knowledge and recipes with our foodie community. Just this year, we launched our Little Foodies Sandpit, an online hub aimed at fostering a love and understanding for nature and organic, healthy food in our small people.

 

As our range and Biona family continued to grow, the dedication to our values remained steadfast. From conception to consumption, nothing but love and care goes into every product. We’ve always looked out for soil, wildlife and all the people involved in bringing our products to you.

 

 

Where We Are Now

Organic is no longer an obscure or fringe idea. Happily, the benefits to people, planet and wildlife are now widely known. But as organic eating has become more widespread, the concept itself has become diluted and even misused.

 

Our new look, popping with gold and beautiful plant imagery, is our way of reassuring you that Biona will continue to put nature and quality at the centre of everything we do. We’ll carry on pioneering in the organic world, building on our strong foundations and global relationships to bring you food that’s good for you and good for the planet. Our ingredients will remain 100% natural, organic and delicious. And while that’s a serious business, it’s also seriously joyful – and we wanted to reflect that, too!

 

In 2019, we moved to our new offices. We’re now a team of nearly 30, bringing 400 organic products to foodies in over 30 countries. We continue to seek ways to tread as lightly as possible on the planet while bringing you the most reliably delicious organic food.
